Will Superconductors Become a Reality? AI Searches for New Materials
Google has unveiled an AI called 'GNoMe' that generates 2.2 million new materials. By using AI to narrow down hundreds of thousands of candidate materials for applications such as solar cells and verifying them directly with automated experimental robots, the process of developing new materials?which typically requires enormous costs and time investments?could be drastically shortened.
Last month, Google DeepMind researchers announced in a paper published in the journal Nature that they discovered 2.2 million new crystal structures using AI, which could lead to the creation of 381,000 new materials.
The AI GNoMe used by the researchers was trained on existing research data for over 50,000 known materials. The compound generation employed two methods: generating structures similar to existing ones and randomly generating compound structures. The generated compounds were tested using Berkeley Lab’s automated robotic system. Among 58 compounds predicted through continuous experiments, 41 were successfully synthesized, demonstrating a high success rate of 71%.
DeepMind research scientist Ekin Douglas explained, "With significant improvements in experiments, autonomous synthesis, and machine learning models, we expect the process that used to take 10 to 20 years to be greatly shortened." Perhaps the day when superconductors, which have recently excited the world, will actually change our lives is approaching.
Fake AI-Generated Speaker at Conference? Group Boycott Ensues
A global technology development conference held online was canceled after it was revealed that a ‘fake’ speaker generated by artificial intelligence (AI) was listed among the presenters.
The incident occurred when it was discovered that a woman named ‘Anna Boyko’ was included in the speaker list for the ‘Devternity’ technology development conference scheduled for the 7th and 8th of this month. Anna Boyko was introduced as an employee of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, but Gergely Oros, a tech newsletter operator, raised suspicions that this person did not actually exist.
Eventually, Eduards Sizovs, the conference founder and engineer, admitted via social media that the speaker was an AI-generated fake. This led to backlash from attendees, including senior technology executives from big tech companies like Microsoft (MS) and Google, who expressed their intention not to participate. Nearly half of the 23 speakers decided not to attend, forcing the organizers to cancel the conference.
There are also suspicions that ‘Alina Prokoda,’ listed as a ‘WhatsApp senior engineer’ among the speakers for another conference, JDKon, planned for May next year by Sizovs, is a fabricated character. As AI becomes capable of producing human-like appearances and voices, such controversies are expected to continue.
Leave Your Christmas Plans to Naver ‘CUE’
Naver has applied its generative AI search service ‘CUE:’ to its integrated search. CUE: has been in pilot operation since September and boasts high convenience through integration with various Naver services such as shopping and local information.
Its standout feature is ‘searching like a human.’ CUE: considers the intent and context of questions on its own, providing information that users previously had to obtain through multiple searches all at once.
For example, when asked, “Find a restaurant in Seongsu-dong that accepts reservations and has parking available for Christmas,” traditional searches required checking each piece of information separately, which took a lot of time to compile. However, with Naver search integrated with CUE:, users can find places that meet their criteria at the top of the search results by linking Naver Place information and the reservation system.
With many appointments with family and friends at the end of the year, why not try organizing your schedule through CUE:?
