Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 1st that it has been selected as the best local government in Gyeonggi Province's 'Clean Gyeonggi Initiative' city and county evaluation and will receive a prize fund of 150 million won.
Since 2019, Gyeonggi Province's 'Clean Gyeonggi Initiative' evaluation divides the 31 cities and counties within the province into three groups based on population size and consists of a quantitative evaluation of 14 indicators, including the reduction of household waste generation, and a qualitative evaluation of special policies for waste reduction.
The city explained that it received high marks in Group A, which consists of local governments with large populations, for reducing household waste directly landfilled at the Sudokwon Landfill Site, separate collection performance of transparent PET bottles, and prevention and promotion of illegal household waste activities. The city added that it also scored highly for prompt response to cleaning complaints within the jurisdiction and policies to reduce the use of disposable items in public institutions.
A city official said, "Based on this year's evaluation results, we will strive to prevent any inconvenience to citizens caused by household waste by discovering citizen participation projects and projects to improve the recycling rate."
