Pukyong National University Students Win ‘Best Excellence and Excellence Awards’ at This Year’s Marine Fisheries Future Research Paper Contest

PhD Candidate Park Seongsik Wins Awards for Two Papers

On the 29th, Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-su) announced that Park Sung-sik, a doctoral student in the Department of Ocean Engineering, received the Grand Prize and Excellence Award at the 2023 Marine Fisheries Future Research Paper Contest.

Hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute and organized by various academic societies in the marine and fisheries fields, Park Sung-sik received the Grand Prize from the Korean Society of Marine Environment and Safety and the Excellence Award from the Korean Society of Marine Environment and Energy.

He was awarded the Grand Prize by the Korean Society of Marine Environment and Safety for his paper titled "Method for Selecting Optimal Discharge Sites to Minimize the Environmental Impact of Thermal Pollutant Discharge" (Advisor: Professor Kim Kyung-hoe).

In this paper, he developed a method for selecting optimal discharge sites that minimize the diffusion area of thermal pollutant discharge by utilizing numerical flow models and machine learning techniques to mitigate the impact of thermal pollution from LNG terminals and power plants on fisheries, earning recognition for his outstanding research results.

He identified the most critical variables determining the diffusion area as the volume of thermal pollutant discharge, surface and bottom layer water temperatures at the discharge point without discharge, bottom layer salinity, temperature difference between surface and bottom layers, and density difference. Applying these variables to a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) model to predict the diffusion area of thermal pollutant discharge showed very high accuracy.

Additionally, he received the Excellence Award from the Korean Society of Marine Environment and Energy for his paper titled "The Relationship Between El Ni?o/La Ni?a and Red Tide Occurrence Along the Korean Coast" (Advisor: Professor Kim Kyung-hoe).

In this paper, he investigated the occurrence status of red tides along the domestic coast (1981?2022) and identified major influencing factors such as precipitation and total nitrogen (TN) in rivers, which was highly evaluated for its research achievements.
