Prosecutors Indict 7 Suspects Without Detention for False Accusations of Sexual and Domestic Violence

The prosecution has brought charges of false accusation against seven individuals, including a man in his 30s who falsely claimed to have been sexually assaulted by a probation officer.

According to the prosecution on the 28th, the Women and Children Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Gumiok) conducted a reinvestigation over approximately seven months since May into cases that the police had dismissed due to lack of evidence, and indicted seven suspects for false accusation without detention.

A 38-year-old man, A, who was under probation for sexual assault, filed a complaint with the police alleging that his probation officer had forcibly touched him four times by putting his hand inside the sleeve of his clothes. Although the police dismissed the case due to lack of evidence, the prosecution reviewed the case files, secured CCTV footage contradicting the complaint, and on August 31 filed a summary indictment against A for false accusation.

B, a 43-year-old who falsely accused her lover of rape after their affair was exposed, was also summarily indicted on September 19. In addition, the prosecution reinvestigated other cases where individuals falsely accused victims of sexual assault in retaliation for being accused themselves, or falsely reported being sexually assaulted after consensual sex for 200,000 won, and brought charges of false accusation to trial.

The prosecution stated, "False accusation is a serious crime that intentionally reports false facts to investigative agencies, putting innocent people at risk of investigation and punishment, thereby shaking the foundation of the national judicial order. We will continue to strictly punish false accusers and do our best to establish judicial order."
