Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it will remove 160 old signs in Geoyeo 1 and 2-dong and replace them with signs designed according to residents' preferences by February next year.

Since the opening of Wirye Seoro-gil, connecting Geoyeo-dong and Wirye New Town, in 2016, the aesthetics of the old city area of Geoyeo-dong and Wirye-dong have shown a stark contrast. The Geoyeo-dong area is filled with old signs and illegal advertisements, causing visual fatigue and harming the urban landscape, making improvements necessary.

Accordingly, the district secured a total project budget of 400 million KRW to resolve the aesthetic imbalance between areas and create a safe and pleasant urban environment, launching a large-scale sign cleanup.

The project area covers Ogeum-ro and Yangsan-ro around Geoyeo Overpass, from the starting point of Geoyeo 1-dong to the Geoyeo Station intersection. The district explained that protruding signs and window advertisements will be removed and organized to comply with outdoor advertising regulations, and old signs will be replaced with new ones that match the surrounding scenery.

In particular, the sign design, which determines the image of the local commercial district, will fully reflect residents' opinions. In October, the 'Ogeum-ro and Yangsan-ro Sign Improvement Project Residents' Council,' composed of residents from Geoyeo 1 and 2-dong, was launched separately for each dong, and in November, a business agreement was signed with them to accelerate the project.

One resident who attended the business agreement ceremony said, "As a local resident, I am glad that residents' opinions are being reflected," and expressed expectations, saying, "I hope the project will expand to the entire Geoyeo Station area and continue with second and third phases of improvement."

The district plans to design an integrated sign design suitable for the street characteristics by December through meetings of the residents' council and review by the Songpa-gu Outdoor Advertising Review Committee.

When installing signs, consultations will be held with each building owner and business to create and install signs that reflect each store's individuality as much as possible while maintaining harmony and consistency. Support for sign replacement and removal costs will be provided up to 2.5 million KRW per sign, one sign per business.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, "Signs are not just advertisements but important visual elements that shape the city's image and can determine the success of local commercial districts," adding, "I hope the sign improvement project will beautifully transform the city's landscape and lead to a virtuous cycle that revitalizes the entire Geoyeo-dong area."
