The Japanese government has requested that the regional governments of Kyushu, Honshu, and other areas accommodate residents of the nearby Okinawa region in the event that Taiwan faces a crisis due to a military attack.
According to Kyodo News on the 27th, the Japanese government asked eight regional governments in Kyushu and western Honshu to accommodate 120,000 residents and tourists from the Okinawa region in case of an emergency in Taiwan. A Cabinet Secretariat official visited Yamaguchi Prefecture in western Honshu that day and said, "The remote islands are geographically far from the mainland," and requested, "We ask Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture to cooperate."
Prior to this, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno visited Kumamoto and Kagoshima Prefectures in Kyushu last month.
The Japanese government plans to evacuate 110,000 residents and 10,000 tourists from the Sakishima Islands in western Okinawa to seven prefectures in Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture if an attack on Taiwan is anticipated.
Each regional government plans to establish cooperative relationships with the five basic municipalities of the Sakishima Islands to discuss securing food, shelter, and medical services.
Okinawa Prefecture is considering transporting 20,000 people per day by aircraft and ships, but the schedule is expected to be delayed if the weather is poor or if the Self-Defense Forces or U.S. military use the airports and ports.
