Lee Young-ae, Daegu City Council Member, Opposes Sale of Public Property for New City Hall Construction... Urges in 5-Minute Speech

Lee Young-ae, a member of the Daegu Metropolitan Council (People Power Party, Dalseo-gu 1), will deliver a 5-minute free speech at the 2nd plenary session of the 305th regular meeting of the Daegu Metropolitan Council on the 28th, urging the immediate withdrawal of Daegu City's plan to "secure funds through the sale of public property" for the construction of the new Daegu City Hall building, and calling for the budget for the new city hall construction to be independently allocated and pursued in a stable and prompt manner.

Councilor Lee raised concerns, stating, "Since the launch of the 8th popularly elected administration, the construction project of the new Daegu City Hall, which had been delayed due to controversy over the partial sale of land to secure project costs, has recently been able to proceed as originally planned after Daegu City withdrew its partial sale policy. However, it still carries the condition of securing finances through the sale of public property, which poses a threat to the project." She explained the background of her 5-minute free speech by saying, "The new city hall construction project is one that leaves no room for debate regarding its necessity and urgency, and the plan to link it with the sale of public property must be immediately withdrawn."

Councilor Lee acknowledged that, as Mayor Hong Joon-pyo claims, the financial soundness of Daegu City is important, but emphasized that the public value gained through the prompt construction of the new city hall is also very significant. She pointed out that the inexplicable delay in the construction of the new city hall has prolonged inefficient local administration, severely damaged trust in administrative decisions, and caused many problems such as a significant increase in project costs due to delays.

In particular, since the announcement of Daegu City's public property sale policy, strong public opposition has formed in various regions against the sale of specific public properties. Councilor Lee believes that if the sale procedures are delayed, the construction of the new city hall will inevitably be halted again.

Councilor Lee emphasized, "If Daegu City's position is that the sale of public property is absolutely necessary for financial soundness, the reason for the sale should not be limited to the single project of the new city hall construction. Instead, it should be approached from the perspective of comprehensively securing investment funds for the promotion of major policy projects overall, including various campaign promises of Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, which involve enormous budgets."

Councilor Lee Young-ae stated, "The prompt construction of the Daegu City Hall, which the local community has deliberated over for a long time and decided with difficulty, can be an important opportunity to restore Daegu's image, which has been continuously declining over the past 20 years, the vitality of the region, and the pride and honor of 2.4 million citizens." She plans to continue her legislative activities for the construction of the new city hall in the future.
