The ‘2023 National Safety Invention Challenge,’ held to develop and utilize ideas and technologies necessary to protect the safety of the public, marked its 6th year this year. It involved five organizations including the Maritime Police, Customs Service, Police, Fire Department, and Patent Office, expanding the scope of participants compared to previous years.

Among a total of 811 ideas submitted in the public official category for this National Safety Invention Challenge, 36 were selected after various evaluation stages including preliminary, written, and face-to-face assessments. On the 24th, an award ceremony was held at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building in Seoul, including 8 selected works from the public category.

Sergeant Park Tae-gyu of the Jeju Maritime Police Station Rescue Team developed the equipment ‘Multidirectional Multispool,’ which enables multiple rescuers to safely conduct precise underwater searches in the event of ship sinking or capsizing accidents. He received the Commissioner of the Korea Coast Guard Award (Silver Award in the public official category). Each selected idea has been commercialized and filed for patents.

Sergeant Park Tae-gyu said, “During the development process, I learned a lot and it became an opportunity for personal growth. I hope it can be a small help for the safety of the public and my colleagues working on the front lines.” He added, “We will strive to widely distribute this equipment as a tool that can be used together with the public through further advancement work.”
