Nowon-gu Launches YouTube Channel to Promote Healthy Eating Habits for All Residents... Part of Nutrition Improvement Project Featuring Proper Nutrition Information and Recipe Videos! Showcasing Healthy Meal Menus, Vegetable and Fruit-Based Healthy Snack Recipes, and Educational Materials for Sustainable Low-Carbon Diets; Also Opens Same-Named KakaoTalk Channel to Boost Promotion... Operates Senior-Focused Health Management YouTube Channel ‘OneulGeongang’
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has launched a YouTube channel to improve the nutritional levels of all residents.
According to the 2021 National Health and Nutrition Survey, meat and sugar intake across all age groups increased by 7.8% and 8.6%, respectively, compared to 2017. In particular, data from Statistics Korea and the National Health Insurance Service showed that the mortality rates of Nowon-gu residents from hypertension (1.9 times) and diabetes (1.4 times) were higher than those in Seoul, and the obesity prevalence rate was also high at 31.7%. A dietary behavior survey of single-person households in Nowon-gu conducted last year showed a meal skipping rate of 53.3% and an appropriate vegetable intake rate of 2.8%.
The district recognized the need to induce dietary behavior changes not only for vulnerable groups but for all residents. To increase educational accessibility, it actively promoted the use of video media. In June, it launched the YouTube channel ‘Nowon-gu Public Health Center Dietary Hipster’ and currently operates three segments: ▲Emotional Solo Meal Recipes ▲Hipster’s Snack Recipes ▲Sustainable Eating Habits.
The ‘Emotional Solo Meal Recipes’ segment originates from the cooking education program ‘Emotional Kitchen I am’ targeting young adults and elderly single-person households. Before the education sessions, nutritionists develop and practice menus and cooking methods, which are filmed in the form of a Vlog (video blog capturing daily life). Using seasonal ingredients such as chwinamul mushroom nutritious rice, spring cabbage kimchi, and pumpkin latte, anyone can easily and simply prepare a meal.
The ‘Hipster’s Snack Recipes’ segment utilizes the nutrition education program for children at local community centers called ‘Kids, Let’s Eat Fruit and Play,’ which was started due to the very low fruit and vegetable intake rates among elementary school students (ages 6?11). Healthy snacks using vegetables and fruits such as tomato caprese open sandwiches, blueberry tarts, and pear-omija sherbet can be made.
The ‘Sustainable Eating Habits’ segment posts educational materials for sustainable low-carbon diets. It was expanded from the ‘Al · Sseul · Shin · Young (Useful and Innovative Nutrition Knowledge)’ project, where professional nutrition instructors visit schools to educate middle school students. Environmental issues related to food such as fair trade, plantations, and microplastics are explained in an easy-to-understand manner for everyone.
Additionally, nutrition and health materials can be received through the KakaoTalk channel ‘Nowon-gu Public Health Center Dietary Hipster.’ The district also operates the YouTube channel ‘Today’s Health’ tailored to seniors, providing videos that make exercise methods and nutrition management easy to understand according to health levels. Health events are also held for program participants.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “As high-fat, high-calorie meals have become frequent these days, practicing earth-friendly healthy eating has become essential for all ages,” adding, “We will establish a systematic nutrition management system from infancy to old age and actively promote it for the health of all residents.”
