Jeonju City and North Korean Defectors Together Make 'Kimchi of Love'

Experience Linked to the '2023 Jeonju Kimchi-Making Culture Festival' on the 25th

On the 25th, Jeonju City in Jeollabuk-do held the 'Kimchi Making with North Korean Defectors' event at Jeonju Sports Complex.

According to the city on the 26th, the event was planned as a cultural experience linked to the '2023 Jeonju Kimchi Culture Festival' to help North Korean defectors living in the area spend the upcoming winter warmly.

On the 25th, North Korean defectors residing in the Jeonju area participated in a kimchi-making cultural experience in conjunction with the '2023 Jeonju Kimchi Culture Festival' to help them stay warm during the upcoming winter.

The event was attended by about 50 people, including North Korean defectors who have settled in Jeonju, settlement helpers, and volunteers, together with the Jeonbuk Hana Center, to make delicious kimchi.

Some of the kimchi made that day was given to the North Korean defectors who participated in the kimchi-making event, and it will also be delivered to the households of North Korean defectors who could not attend the event.

One North Korean defector said, "Last year, I received kimchi from the kimchi-making event and was grateful, so this year I came out to volunteer myself and felt the great joy of sharing." He added, "Especially this year, the price of kimchi ingredients rose significantly, making preparation very difficult, so I am thankful that the burden was eased."

Im Sook-hee, head of the Autonomous Administration Division, said, "We will frequently create opportunities for meetings so that North Korean defectors can adapt to the local community more quickly, and we will do our best to prepare support measures to help them adapt well as members of the local community."
