On the 19th, at the 8th Gyeongju Racecourse in Seoul, ‘Winnersman’ (owner Lee Kyung-hee, trainer Choi Ki-hong, jockey Seo Seung-woon) won the 19th President's Cup (G1) Championship Race (domestic, 3 years and older, 2000m, prize money 1 billion KRW), achieving the first-ever G1 Grand Slam in Korean horse racing history.
‘Winnersman’ settled in around 9th place early in the race, conserving energy by not aggressively moving into the leading pack. Then, at the 3rd corner where the straightaway opposite the finish line ends, he moved up to 5th place and entered the home stretch, overtaking ‘Global Hit’ and ‘Speed Young’ in succession to cross the finish line first.
The winning time was 2 minutes 05.1 seconds, breaking the President's Cup race record of 2 minutes 05.3 seconds by 0.2 seconds within a year. The margin over 2nd place ‘Global Hit’ was 7 lengths (approximately 17 meters), the largest gap recorded between 1st and 2nd place horses in the history of the President's Cup.
With this victory by ‘Winnersman’, unprecedented records that will be difficult to break in Korean horse racing have been set.
There are a total of five G1 races in Korean horse racing, and ‘Winnersman’ has won four of these G1 races, achieving the G1 Grand Slam that no other horse has accomplished.
‘Winnersman’ won the Korean Derby at age 3, the Korea Cup and Grand Prix at age 4, and this year at age 5, he conquered the President's Cup, becoming a horse that has achieved everything possible in Korea.
With the prize money of 550 million KRW added from this President's Cup victory, ‘Winnersman’ has earned a total of 4.31 billion KRW.
This surpasses the previous record held by ‘Triple Nine’ of 4.26 billion KRW by 50 million KRW. Additionally, ‘Winnersman’ has expressed intention to participate in the Grand Prix (G1) scheduled for December 17, leaving room to further improve his own record.
‘Winnersman’s’ sire is ‘Musketman’, last year’s leading sire (meaning the stallion whose progeny earned the most prize money), who is ranked 3rd among stallions this year as well.
‘Winnersman’s’ dam is ‘Winners Marine’, who placed 3rd in the 2014 Korean Oaks (G2). ‘Winners Marine’ recorded 6 wins in 29 starts during her racing career and reached the domestic first-class level.
‘Winnersman’s’ grandsire is the American-bred ‘YONAGUSKA’, who sired ‘Tough Win’, the 2011 Grand Prix winner.
As ‘Winnersman’, born from such excellent bloodlines, has recorded outstanding racing results, attention has also turned to his siblings.
On the 21st, at the Jeju yearling auction, a foal of ‘Winners Marine’ (sired by ‘Musketman’) was sold for a high price of 98 million KRW, proving that horse racing is truly a sport of bloodlines.
