Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 23rd that it will install remote-controlled vehicle barriers at five underground road tunnels within the city to prevent vehicle entry during emergencies such as fires and floods, aiming to reduce damage caused by disasters.

The locations where the vehicle barriers will be installed include ▲Sammakgok 1st and 2nd underground tunnels (Bojung-dong, Giheung-gu) ▲Suseong underground tunnel (Jung-dong, Giheung-gu) ▲Gangnam University underground tunnel (Gugal-dong, Giheung-gu) ▲Shindae underground tunnel (Sanghyeon-dong, Suji-gu). The city plans to start construction early next year and complete the installation by June, before the rainy season.
A total of 2.5 billion KRW will be invested in this project, including 1.25 billion KRW secured by the city through Gyeonggi Province’s '2024 Underground Tunnel Vehicle Barrier Installation Project.'
Including the Jukjeon underground tunnel (Jukjeon-dong, Suji-gu), where barriers were previously installed, and the Sanghyeon underground tunnel (Sanghyeon-dong, Suji-gu), which is scheduled for completion in the first half of next year, the total number of underground tunnels equipped with automatic vehicle barriers in the city will increase to seven. Currently, Yongin City is installing entry barriers in 22 underground tunnels to prepare for fires, floods, and other emergencies.
Separately, the city is operating 22 barriers and 19 electronic display boards at three flood-prone low-lying roads, including Sewolgyo in Pogok-eup, Cheoin-gu, and roads in Mohyeon and Namsa-eup, Cheoin-gu, which are frequently flooded during heavy rains.
At the entrance road to Imwon Village in Gorim-dong, a road prone to frequent flooding, a disaster safety electronic display board has been installed to allow citizens to check disaster situations in advance. Additionally, 84 barriers are currently operating at 10 locations within Giheung-gu, including Osancheon and Tancheon. The city plans to install five electronic display boards by early next year to notify whether the barriers are in operation at locations such as Yeongdeok Sewolgyo on Singalcheon, Boragyo Intersection on Jigokcheon, and Pungdeok Overpass Intersection on Seongbokcheon.
A city official stated, "With the installation of these vehicle barriers, we will be able to respond more quickly to disasters," adding, "We will do our best to prevent property and human damage through thorough management of frequently flooded roads."
