‘Panta G Bus,’ the first domestic public transportation service equipped with autonomous driving technology, surpassed 10,000 passengers within four months of operation.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 23rd that as of the 21st, the Panta G Bus had recorded 12,000 passengers.
On July 17, Gyeonggi Province began a pilot operation of Panta G Bus, the first autonomous public transportation service in Korea, meaning “Gyeonggi (G) Bus you ride in Pangyo.” The Panta G Bus has traveled a cumulative distance of 11,714 km over four months until the 21st, running between Pangyo Station and the Corporate Growth Center (a total of 5.9 km), passing through Pangyo 1st Techno Valley and 2nd Techno Valley.
The daily average number of passengers on the Panta G Bus, which operates 24 times a day, nearly doubled from 74 in July, the early stage of operation, to 136 in October.
Pangyo Techno Valley is one of the representative areas where traffic congestion frequently occurs during commuting hours and public transportation use is difficult, as it is densely populated with leading domestic companies and institutions. Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province decided to operate the Panta G Bus.
Gyeonggi Province expects that the advanced autonomous driving technology will greatly contribute to solving transportation problems in vulnerable traffic areas within the province, exceeding expectations.
Jung Han-gyu, Director of the Advanced Mobility Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, “Panta G Bus has not only demonstrated the potential as a practical public transportation means but also significantly contributed to increasing social acceptance of advanced technology,” adding, “We will strive to make it a cornerstone for solving transportation problems in vulnerable traffic areas.”
The Panta G Bus is operated under consignment by the Next-Generation Convergence Technology Institute with a total of two vehicles. It operates 24 times a day at 30-minute intervals from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays (based on departure time). The bus has a total of 14 seats, including 2 seats reserved for transportation-vulnerable passengers.
