Chae Chiseong, Former Gugak Broadcasting President, Appointed New Artistic Director of National Gugak Orchestra

The National Theater of Korea announced on the 21st that Chae Chi-seong (70), former president of Gugak Broadcasting, has been appointed as the new artistic director and general director of its resident ensemble, the National Gugak Orchestra. His term will last for three years until November 20, 2026.

Chae Chi-seong, the newly appointed artistic director and general director, graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Korean traditional music, earned a master's degree in music from Chung-Ang University, and completed doctoral coursework in music at Hanyang University.


He has since served as president of Gugak Broadcasting, assistant conductor of the KBS Gugak Orchestra, and producer of KBS radio's traditional music programs, gaining recognition for his planning skills and organizational management capabilities. As a holder of the national intangible cultural asset in Pansori percussion accompaniment, he has consistently been active as a gugak composer and conductor.


Park In-geon, director of the National Theater, said, “Director Chae is an artist and an expert in gugak planning and production with rich experience,” adding, “We expect him to bring a fresh breeze to the National Theater and the National Gugak Orchestra.”
