Special Exhibition "Another Bukhansan Sunsubi" at Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum

Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) will hold a special planned exhibition titled "Another Bukhansan Sunsubi" at the Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum from the 22nd until April 14th of next year. "Another Bukhansan Sunsubi" showcases the beauty of Bukhansan, a blessing and pride of Eunpyeong, alongside the pain caused by environmental destruction spreading throughout the Bukhansan area.

This exhibition begins with the Bukhansan Sunsubi (巡狩碑). On the back of the Sunsubi, which records the territorial expansion of King Jinheung of Silla, there is unexpectedly also an inscription documenting the damage and scars inflicted on Bukhansan’s natural environment.

The exhibition is divided into four parts: ▲Part 1 "Purity itself, Bukhansan" ▲Part 2 "Ongoing wounds, approaching crisis" ▲Part 3 "Efforts to recover, values to protect" ▲Part 4 "Another Bukhansan Sunsubi (純粹碑)".

In Part 1, "Purity itself, Bukhansan," visitors explore the various names, formation processes, and natural landscapes of Bukhansan. The diverse flora and fauna inhabiting Bukhansan are presented through detailed botanical illustrations and pressed flower art.

Part 2, "Ongoing wounds, approaching crisis," highlights the painful state of Bukhansan, which suffers from damage caused by the large number of visitors relative to its area and the threats posed by climate change. Detailed illustrations depict the new dominant species that displace native plants and animals in Bukhansan.

Part 3, "Efforts to recover, values to protect," reviews the history of ecological conservation efforts to protect Bukhansan through newspaper articles. Over the past 50 years, from the 1970s to the present, Bukhansan has experienced cycles of recovery and damage.

In Part 4, "Another Bukhansan Sunsubi," after viewing the exhibition, visitors can participate in an interactive experience by leaving messages or personal pledges to protect the purity of Bukhansan, thereby creating another Sunsubi for Bukhansan.

The exhibition features works by artist Lim Chae-wook, who depicts the view from Bukhansan Bibong and the Sunsubi, animal illustrations by artist Lee Woo-man, botanical illustrations by the Botanical Garden and Arboretum Association of Korea’s detailed painting committee, and pressed flower art by the Korea Flower Pressing Association.

During the exhibition period, the Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum will also conduct educational programs themed around "Bukhansan." For families, programs such as "Meeting the Small Neighbors of Bukhansan, the Birds" and "Plogging with the Museum at Bukhansan!" will be offered. For elementary students, programs include "Climate X Art Project," "Stories in Wildflowers," and "Promise with Bukhansan." Applications for these programs can be made through the Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum website.

An academic conference related to the exhibition will also be held. The conference titled "Symbiosis and Coexistence: Bukhansan Embracing Eunpyeong" will take place on the 24th from 1:30 PM to 5 PM at the Seoul Archives (5th floor conference hall, 7 Tongil-ro 62-gil, Eunpyeong-gu).

This academic conference is based on the contents covered in the 2021 "Eunpyeong Hanok Village History and Environment Archiving Research Project." It aims to examine the history and natural environment of Eunpyeong located beneath Bukhansan and explore ecological approaches for coexistence. Presentations include ▲Historical and locational conditions of Eunpyeong (Park Jeong-won, former director of the National Mountaineering School) ▲Historical cultural heritage of Eunpyeong (Kim Deok-hyun, emeritus professor at Gyeongsang National University) ▲Natural environmental characteristics of Eunpyeong and Bukhansan (Park Su-jin, Department of Geography, Seoul National University) ▲Characteristics of Bukhansan’s wildlife (Park Chan-yeol, National Institute of Forest Science). Anyone interested is welcome to participate.
