Haenam-gun Begins Construction of Surface Water Reinforcement Development Project to Alleviate Drought in Hwawon Gurim District

Total Project Cost of 3.9 Billion KRW Invested to Supply Agricultural Water to 33.83ha of Farmland in Gurim and Eoksu Villages

Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, is commencing a surface water reinforcement development project to resolve water shortages in the agricultural lands of Gurim and Eoksu villages in Hwawon-myeon, which suffer from drought damage every year.

According to the county on the 20th, this project, with a total budget of 3.9 billion KRW, will use the Hwawon pumping station managed by the Korea Rural Community Corporation Yeongsan River Project Group to supply water from Geumho Lake to Masanje, where a pumping station will be installed to provide agricultural water to the Gurim and Eoksu reservoirs.

The total beneficiary area is 33.83 hectares, with construction starting this November and scheduled for completion in October 2025.

The agricultural lands in Gurim and Eoksu villages mainly produce rice and field crops such as cabbage, onion, garlic, and chili peppers. In particular, cabbage and onions require a large amount of water, but the water volume supplied to the irrigation area of the Gurim and Eoksu village reservoirs is insufficient, causing repeated drought damage every year.

Additionally, more than seven attempts to develop groundwater through wells to secure water independently have failed, leading to the promotion of this project to ensure stable agricultural water supply.

Along with the installation of the pumping station, embankment grouting and waterproofing to prevent embankment leakage, as well as the repair and improvement of drainage channels, will also be carried out.

A county official stated, “We are proactively seeking countermeasures to secure stable agricultural water supply in areas repeatedly affected by drought due to abnormal climate,” adding, “We plan to continuously promote surface water reinforcement development projects to resolve drought-prone areas in the future.”
