A competition was held where future doctors and engineers stayed up all night for 1 night and 2 days to come up with startup ideas in the field of digital healthcare.
UNIST and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) College of Medicine held the "1st Digital Healthcare Hackathon" at the UNIST Industry-Academic Cooperation Building from the 17th to the 18th.
This competition was organized to find innovative startup ideas in the digital healthcare field through intensive short-term collaboration among student teams from various majors.
A total of 56 students from UNIST and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology College of Medicine, who are enrolled in the UNIST-Ulsan College of Medicine HST (Health Sciences and Technology) program, participated in the competition. HST is an interdisciplinary biomedical engineering program jointly operated by the two universities to train medical scientists and engineers.
The detailed themes of the hackathon included patient monitoring and management, medical image diagnosis, telemedicine, emergency medical care, and drug selection. Students presented various startup ideas that innovate existing medical fields based on digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data.
The grand prize was awarded to the GTA team, who presented an app development project aimed at helping communication with people on the autism spectrum. In addition, the DODO, NEBULA, STEM, and USU teams were selected as excellent teams. The five selected teams will be offered opportunities for training in the United States, including at UCLA, in January next year.
Baek Seong-cheol, Dean of the Graduate School of Medical Science at UNIST, said, “I hope this competition has increased interest in biomedical engineering convergence digital healthcare technology and served as an opportunity to improve collaboration skills among students from different majors.”
This competition was organized by the UNIST Graduate School of Medical Science, Smart Healthcare Center, UNIST Laboratory Startup Innovation Group of the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Laboratory Specialized Startup Leading University, and was sponsored by LG Uplus.
