Pre-Inspection to Be Conducted by the End of November
Scientific Inspection Using Advanced Equipment
The Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office will conduct intensive inspections of air pollutant emission sites in cooperation with related agencies from December this year to March 2024, during the fine dust seasonal management period.
The main targets are sites that emit large amounts of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Prior to the full-scale inspection, a preliminary inspection will be conducted by the end of November to provide an opportunity for the sites themselves to proactively manage pollutants and improve facilities.
The inspections will be conducted scientifically and systematically using advanced monitoring equipment such as mobile air monitoring vehicles, drones, and Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) cameras.
To this end, air pollutant data will be collected and analyzed in advance for areas with frequent complaints, and related agencies such as local governments and the Korea Environment Corporation will collaborate to enhance the expertise and effectiveness of guidance and inspections.
The main inspection items include whether unauthorized air emission facilities are installed, whether air pollution control facilities are operating normally, compliance with management standards, and compliance with other environmental laws and regulations.
In particular, samples of air pollutants emitted from the chimneys of the sites will be directly collected and analyzed to verify compliance with emission permit standards.
Strict measures such as prosecution and administrative sanctions will follow against companies violating environmental laws during this inspection.
Director Choi Jong-won stated, “We will do our best to protect public health from fine dust in winter by intensively monitoring illegal emissions of air pollutants using advanced equipment,” and added, “We also urge businesses in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam areas to actively participate in managing their sites to reduce fine dust.”
