According to informant A, the incident occurred on the 9th inside the Olive Young store at Gangnam Station. At the time, A was inside the store to buy something and witnessed a male soldier hesitantly coming up the stairs, grabbing a man, and asking, "Can I see your phone?"
He explained, "I thought it was nothing serious and was about to pass by, but the soldier said to another woman, 'I think this person took illegal photos,' and said we should report it." Thanks to the soldier's report, the police arrived and arrested the illegal filming suspect.
When the man tried to run away, Private Kim linked arms to block him, and when the man tried to delete his photo album, he stopped him from destroying evidence. Later, the police who arrived after the report took the man suspected of committing illegal filming into custody.
When A asked Private Kim, "How did you catch him?" Kim replied, "When he was going up the stairs, his phone camera was on, so I thought 'I can't just leave it like that' and caught him."
According to A, the man is known to have illegally filmed multiple citizens at Gangnam Station.
A said, "In a doubtful situation, he courageously caught the illegal filming suspect, reported to the police, waited until the police arrived, and even gave a statement. It was very impressive."
The soldier is reported to be Private Kim, currently serving in the 25th Division (25th Infantry Division, 1st Army Corps, located in Gyeonggi-do).
Comments saying "Private Kim should be given a reward leave" are pouring in. Netizens praised him, saying, "There could have been more victims, but thanks to his courage, it was prevented," and "A soldier protecting the country even during leave."
Private A told Yonhap News, "I have always been taught to protect the people, so I acted without hesitation. I did what I should as a soldier and will continue to carry out the assigned duties well."
The Army plans to award Private A with commendations such as the division commander's citation for fulfilling his duty to protect the people even during leave.
