Jeonnam Province Takes Proactive Measures to Prevent Bedbug Spread

Jeonnam Province has launched focused containment management, including technical training for pest control teams, in response to growing nationwide concerns over the spread of bedbugs.

As of the 14th, no cases of bedbug sightings or damage have been confirmed in the region, but with recent bedbug occurrences not only in the metropolitan area but across the country, the province announced it is implementing proactive measures.

A joint bedbug countermeasure team has been formed, including departments responsible for facilities with high risk of bedbug outbreaks such as lodging businesses and dormitories, and counseling phone lines have been established at health centers in 22 cities and counties to provide accurate information about bedbugs and alleviate residents' concerns.

In particular, a four-week intensive inspection period has been set until December 8, during which bedding hygiene and signs of bedbugs will be checked at 17,000 high-risk facilities such as lodging establishments.

Furthermore, in case of bedbug outbreaks, business operators are expected to conduct self-pest control as a principle, but for vulnerable groups who find self-control difficult, health center pest control teams will provide support.

Jeonnam Province plans to support cities and counties with a budget of 100 million won to supply bedbug control items such as steamers and vacuum cleaners, as well as insecticides approved by the Ministry of Environment.

To effectively carry out unprecedented bedbug control, professional technical training for health center pest control teams will be conducted in cooperation with the Pest Control Association.

Agreements between business operator groups and pest control companies will facilitate expert monitoring, and bedbug safety stickers will be attached at business entrances to ease concerns of residents and tourists.

Lee Sang-shim, Director of the Health and Welfare Bureau of Jeonnam Province, stated, “Bedbugs are not insects that transmit infectious diseases, so there is no need for excessive anxiety,” adding, “We will provide accurate information related to bedbugs and do our best to prevent their spread so that public hygiene establishments can be used with confidence.”
