Lee Sang-geun, the mayor of Goseong County, Gyeongnam, visited a strawberry farm in Deokseon-ri, Goseong-eup on the 13th along with about 10 staff members from the Agricultural Technology Department to help with the labor shortage.
Goseong County is promoting a concentrated autumn rural labor assistance campaign from October 17 to November 17 to support farms struggling with labor shortages and rising labor costs due to the aging rural population during the busy autumn farming season.
Accordingly, the mayor and the staff took the lead in performing tasks such as replanting dead strawberry plants and removing runners and withered leaves.
In autumn strawberry farms, runners and yellowed leaves are removed to improve the growing environment and dead plants are replaced with new strawberry seedlings to produce delicious strawberries.
The strawberry farm that received help on this day expressed gratitude, saying, "We were at a loss because there was no labor during this difficult time, but the support has given us great strength."
The mayor said, "Although it is a small gesture, if it can be of great help, I am ready to go anywhere. We will continue to do our best to assist farms struggling with labor shortages."
Meanwhile, every year during the busy farming season, from sowing to harvesting, the helping hands of employees from the Gyeongnam Provincial Office and Goseong County Office continue, and farms receiving timely agricultural support express great appreciation.
Since even small help can be a great aid in the agricultural field, organizations wishing to assist with rural labor can contact the Agricultural Technology Department’s Food Technology Officer or the relevant Eup/Myeon Industrial Economy Officer of Goseong County.
