JSTEC Ships Battery Cell Samples to India... "Accelerating Secondary Battery Business"

Jastec announced on the 13th that it had secured an order worth approximately KRW 17.1 billion for secondary battery cell manufacturing process solutions. Along with this, battery cell samples were shipped to India.

The initial mass production samples being shipped this time were produced for BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification for battery sales in India and for customer quality verification. Once BIS certification is completed, all secondary battery cells produced domestically will be supplied to IBC India next year. IBC’s Indian customers include manufacturers of two-wheelers and tractors.

Jastec entered the secondary battery market by acquiring Sang-A PS (now Jaspulsion) in August 2022. Starting with the internalization and sample supply of prismatic can case and cap assembly parts, it signed a KRW 16 billion supply contract for a secondary battery production line with the US company IBC.

The battery production line established at Jastec’s Seonghwan plant is a 50MWh scale pilot line. Cell development is handled by JASES (Jastec Energy Solution), while can and cap assembly parts are managed by JASP (Jaspulsion).

IBC aims to build a final 50GWh production line to enter the Indian secondary battery market with Jastec, starting with a 0.5GWh production line in Phase 1. The order for the 1.5GWh line in Phase 2 is planned for October next year. In Phase 3, a 10GWh annual production line will be completed by 2027. Plans include building 20GWh by 2029 and 50GWh by 2033. While Jastec supplies cells produced domestically to Indian customers next year, it has already secured a 100-acre (120,000 pyeong) site in the Bangalore area to establish a gigafactory production facility in India. Final price negotiations are underway to build a 2GWh battery production line by 2025.

Jae-Song Jeong, Chairman of Jastec, emphasized, "Based on the know-how accumulated as a semiconductor and display manufacturing equipment specialist, we will establish ourselves as a specialized company in secondary battery manufacturing equipment and production." He added, "We will actively enter the Indian market, which is emerging as a key country in the secondary battery market, and leap forward as a global manufacturing specialist in the secondary battery field next year."
