Expectations for Reassessing the Historical and Core Natural Resource Value of Dangsanrim
Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) has opened the "Shinan-gun Dangsallim Online Exhibition Hall," which compiles photographic data achievements of the Shinan Dangsallim forest to date.
According to the county on the 13th, Dangsallim is an ecological resource representing village faith forests that express natural and cultural heritage, enhancing the regional natural landscape and creating a unique scenery that reflects the identity of the village.
Recently, Shinan-gun organized the humanities content related to the Dangje ritual, but there has been no systematic ecological data on the distribution of Dangsallim, and some areas have been neglected. Therefore, a project was carried out to secure basic data for active conservation, restoration, and promotion through a status survey and video production for each Dangsallim forest.
From 2021 to 2023, the county conducted a detailed basic survey of Dangsallim forests in the Heuksan area, northern area, central area, and southern area to establish effective management plans.
Additionally, by promoting a video production service for Dangsallim, photographs of each Dangsallim were cataloged, and an online exhibition hall was opened on the Shinan Biosphere Reserve website to allow the general public easy access for viewing.
The online exhibition hall introduces Shinan Dangsallim and shows the distribution status and photographic data of Dangsallim in 9 areas of the Heuksan region, 3 areas of the northern region, 3 areas of the central region, and 6 areas of the southern region in Shinan.
In particular, the Dangsallim forests are arranged so that anyone can view them, widely promoting their historical value, and they are planned to be used as precious core natural resources and educational materials of the UNESCO Shinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve.
Since 2021, Shinan-gun has completed a status survey of 89 Dangsallim forest distributions. Through this, a Dangsallim database has been established for the conservation of Shinan-gun’s natural ecosystem, island biological resource development, and ecosystem service utilization, and it is being promoted as a basic survey to pursue the registration of Shinan Dangsallim as a World Heritage site in the future.
Governor Park Woo-ryang stated, “Dangsallim represents the natural vegetation of island villages where a thousand years of history breathe, possessing ecological characteristics that make it a precious core natural resource of the UNESCO Shinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve,” and added, “We will promote the designation of Shinan Dangsallim as a scenic site and its registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site.”
