Gwanak-gu Delivers Love-filled Kimchi to 369 Households

Over 80 Participants Including Gwanak-gu Volunteer Center Deliver Kimchi to 369 Low-Income and Dementia-Risk Households Using Crops Grown in Gwanak-gu Urban Garden

Despite the recent chilly weather, Gwanak-gu remains warm with the kindness of its neighbors.

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) held the 2023 'Kimchi Making and Sharing Day' event on the 10th at the Gang Gamchan Garden opposite Nakseongdae Park, in collaboration with the Gwanak-gu Volunteer Center.

The district has been operating the eco-friendly Gang Gamchan Garden, providing opportunities to experience various agricultural programs. Furthermore, the district organizes cooperative and sharing events with residents using napa cabbage, radishes, and other produce grown in eco-friendly gardens like Gang Gamchan Garden within the area.

This kimchi sharing event started in 2016 and has continued for eight years this year. Over 80 volunteer camp activists participated to extend warmth and sharing to neighbors in need.

A total of 1,260 kg of kimchi prepared that day was delivered to 369 low-income and dementia-risk households in the district through the 21 volunteer camps of Gwanak-gu.

A resident who received the kimchi expressed gratitude, saying, "With prices rising so much recently, I couldn't even think of making kimchi, so thank you very much."

Park Junhee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, "Although it is just a small jar of kimchi, I hope it becomes an opportunity for neighbors to support each other and practice sharing," adding, "We will continue to do our best to create a Gwanak-gu where all residents can live with smiles."

The district is building high-quality infrastructure for eco-friendly urban agriculture. The Gang Gamchan Urban Agriculture Center and the Samsung-dong Gwanak Urban Agriculture Park each received the Excellence Award at the 2023 Korea Public Architecture Awards and the Grand Prize for Spatial Welfare, respectively.
