The Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL) announced on the 9th that it held an opening ceremony for the 'Electric Vehicle Battery Second-use Technology Support Center' at Seongbon Industrial Complex in Eumseong, Chungbuk.
Built with investments from Chungcheongbuk-do and Eumseong-gun and support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the center was established on a total floor area of 1,520㎡ (approximately 460 pyeong) within the KCL site in Seongbon Complex. The center consists of two safety testing rooms, one fire testing room, and one performance evaluation and sample storage building, equipped with 21 battery analysis and performance testing devices across 10 types.
The safety testing rooms, covering 330㎡ (100 pyeong), can conduct battery compression, drop, and short-circuit tests. The 419㎡ (127 pyeong) fire testing room is the only dedicated thermal runaway transition test room for electric vehicle batteries in the central region, equipped with dust collection facilities capable of responding to battery explosions. The 495㎡ (150 pyeong) performance evaluation testing room conducts assessments of used batteries. Through this, the center provides a one-stop full-cycle testing and certification service for electric vehicle batteries.
Jo Young-tae, President of KCL, stated, “The evaluation hub for used batteries, currently concentrated in the southern regions such as Ulsan, Pohang, and Naju, has now been established in the central region.” He added, “Based on the experience and know-how accumulated in international-level battery testing, evaluation, and research fields, we will contribute to the industrial development and job creation in Eumseong-gun and Chungbuk area, and help enhance industrial competitiveness throughout the entire lifecycle of secondary batteries.”
The event was attended by about 70 people including Kim Myung-gyu, Vice Governor of Chungcheongbuk-do; Jo Byung-ok, Mayor of Eumseong-gun; Ahn Hae-sung, Chairman of Eumseong-gun Council; Ki Seong-seop, Head of Korea Energy Technology Evaluation Institute; Park Tae-sung, Vice Chairman of Korea Battery Industry Association; Oh Won-geun, President of Chungbuk Technopark; KCL President Jo Young-tae; Vice President Lee Sang-kwon; and battery industry representatives from LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, among others.
