Galaxy S24 Series Enables Real-Time Smartphone Translation with Generative AI
No Personal Data Stored in Cloud, Eliminating Privacy Concerns
Samsung Electronics will equip its next flagship smartphone, the ‘Galaxy S24 series,’ set to be unveiled in January next year, with a real-time translation call feature. When speaking in Korean, artificial intelligence (AI) will translate the conversation into the other party’s language in real time and convey the content. This is the first time a Galaxy smartphone will have a real-time translation function.
On the 9th, Samsung Electronics announced that the next Galaxy series will feature a real-time translation call function utilizing on-device AI technology. On-device AI refers to AI embedded in smart devices, including Bixby and the generative AI model ‘Samsung Gauss’ unveiled by Samsung Electronics the day before. Samsung has decided to call this ‘Galaxy AI.’
The core of Galaxy AI is Samsung Gauss. Based on machine learning technology, it consists of three models: a language model that generates text (Samsung Gauss Language), a code model that generates code (Samsung Gauss Code), and an image model that generates images (Samsung Gauss Image). Among these, the language model helps handle tasks such as email writing, document summarization, and translation more easily and quickly, while enabling smarter device control.
Choi Won-jun, Vice President and Head of Development at Samsung Electronics’ MX Division, said, “Mobile technology has long been at the center of communication, productivity, and creative experiences in our society. Now, mobile AI technology meaningfully integrated with Galaxy will create unprecedented new experiences and redefine the role of the smartphone.”
The biggest feature of the Galaxy S24 series, which will apply on-device AI, is the translation function. It enables smooth real-time communication in different languages as if having a personal interpreter. When a Galaxy S24 user speaks comfortably in their own language as usual, Galaxy AI translates and delivers the conversation in real time into the other party’s language without the need to install any separate external application (app). The translation function can be used even if the other party’s smartphone is not a Galaxy S24.
Samsung Electronics expects the real-time translation feature to break down long-standing language barriers and bring users closer together. For example, people who are not confident in foreign languages can communicate effortlessly in Korean when traveling abroad or on business trips. It also makes it easy to get help when negotiating new projects with overseas partners over the phone at work or handling everyday matters like hospital appointments while living abroad.
The translated conversation can be heard as audio or displayed as text on the smartphone for visual confirmation. Most importantly, because the feature is provided ‘on-device,’ call content does not leak outside the phone in any situation, ensuring security. This means the data is not stored in the cloud or elsewhere.
Samsung Electronics plans to lead the on-device AI market by embedding Samsung Gauss in the Galaxy S24 in the first half of next year and gradually applying generative AI models to various products. After equipping the Galaxy series, the technology will be utilized in various Samsung Electronics IT devices such as tablets and laptops.
Vice President Choi said, “Samsung Galaxy will bring the benefits of AI closer to our daily lives in a tangible way. It will enable more efficient work and communication faster and easier by overcoming language barriers.” He added, “Under the security and privacy protection provided by Galaxy, we will safely and reliably transform our daily lives.”
