Recent Marvel Releases in the Last 1-2 Years Draw Over 150,000 Viewers
'The Marvels' Attracts Around 90,000, Half the Number
The Marvel movie 'The Marvels' drew 90,000 viewers on its opening day, starting off as the box office leader. This is about half the first-day score recorded by recently released Marvel films.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the 9th, 'The Marvels' (directed by Nia DaCosta) attracted 91,563 viewers the previous day, topping the box office. The cumulative audience including preview screenings is 92,287.
'The Marvels' is the second story of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) superhero 'Captain Marvel' (2019).
Although the film started off in first place on its opening day, opinions agree that it is a hollow first place. It is an underwhelming performance for a Marvel movie. Unusually, it did not even surpass 100,000 viewers on the first day.
Looking at recently released Marvel films, they have attracted at least 150,000 viewers on their first day. Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3,' released in May, drew about 163,000 viewers on its first day, and 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,' released in March, attracted about 174,000 viewers.
Also, 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,' released last November, drew about 184,000 viewers on its first day. 'Thor: Love and Thunder,' released last July, was seen by about 382,000 viewers on its first day. Most of these figures are double or more compared to 'The Marvels' first-day score of about 90,000 viewers.
This background is believed to be influenced by mixed reactions from domestic audiences. Although it is actor Park Seo-joon's first Hollywood appearance, his screen time is reportedly only about five minutes at most, and the content has been described as disappointing, which seems to have failed to raise expectations.
Furthermore, the impact of the ongoing Hollywood actors and broadcast workers union (SAG-AFTRA) strike in the U.S. since July is also believed to have affected the film's promotion, which was not properly conducted.
However, since this is the first-day audience count, there is a possibility of an upward trend afterward. 'The Marvels' features an interesting narrative of three female heroes and the appearance of an attractive cat hero, which are considered highlights and have generated some anticipation.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the Japanese animation 'How Do You Live?' attracted 23,367 viewers, dropping to second place, and 'New Normal' (directed by Jung Beom-sik) started in third place with 12,790 viewers. 'Boys' (directed by Jung Ji-young) recorded 12,580 viewers, ranking fourth.
The total number of moviegoers who visited theaters that day was counted at 172,659.
