OpenAI ChatGPT Outage Restored After About 90 Minutes

OpenAI's ChatGPT experienced a large-scale outage on the morning of the 8th (local time) but was restored to normal within about 90 minutes.

According to U.S. financial media CNBC and others, OpenAI's services were simultaneously blocked for a period that morning. OpenAI stated on its homepage, "We identified an error affecting all services between 5:42 AM and 7:16 AM (Pacific Time)," adding, "We have identified the issue and restored the service, which is now operating normally."

However, the company did not disclose the cause of the outage after the service was restored. Although ChatGPT has experienced intermittent outages since its launch in November last year, this is the first time such a large-scale outage has been reported.

This outage affected not only ChatGPT users but also more than 2 million developers who use OpenAI's application programming interface (API) to build their own tools. When accessing websites, a message stating "ChatGPT is overloaded" was displayed. OpenAI referred to it as a "major outage."

The incident occurred shortly after OpenAI held its first developer conference since its founding and announced a new artificial intelligence (AI) model. On the 6th, OpenAI held its inaugural developer conference (Dev Day) in San Francisco, California, where it unveiled its most powerful AI model, 'GPT-4 Turbo.' The company also announced plans to support anyone in creating customized chatbots tailored to their needs and to launch a 'GPT Store' where these can be bought and sold.

CEO Sam Altman introduced, "OpenAI currently has 100 million weekly active users, and over 92% of Fortune 500 companies use ChatGPT."
