Long-term Measures Including National Road Expansion and New Alternative Roads
Mayor Lee Sang-il: "Proactive Response Considering Rapid Increase in Traffic Demand"
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 7th that it will implement a comprehensive plan for the Yangji-myeon area in Cheoin-gu, a representative section of frequent traffic congestion in the city.
Yangji-myeon is an area where the Yangji IC of the Yeongdong Expressway, National Route 42, and National Route 17 intersect. Recently, as the surrounding area has rapidly developed, major roads have experienced severe congestion not only during weekday rush hours but also on weekends.
The city plans to fundamentally resolve traffic congestion in the area by establishing short- and long-term road traffic measures reflecting large-scale projects such as the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, and the National Advanced System Semiconductor Industrial Complex in Idong and Namsa-eup.
To this end, the city will first respond systematically to traffic demand caused by large-scale development by expanding arterial roads such as National Routes 42 and 17 or opening bypass roads in the mid to long term.
Currently, National Route 17 is included in Yongin City's 5th National and Local Road Construction Plan, and the 3.1 km section from Pyeongchang Intersection to Yangji IC Intersection is scheduled to be expanded to six lanes. The Seoul Regional Land Management Office is currently conducting the design.
The city will continue to consult with the government to include alternative bypass roads between Namdong and Yangji on National Route 42, the Yangji to Gwangju Docheok section on National Route 17, and the newly established section from Idong to Wonsam on Local Route 84 in the 6th National and Local Road Construction Plan.
Through the ongoing 'Yongin City Road Construction and Management Plan and Basic Maintenance Plan for Rural Roads' project, the city plans to prepare the optimal route connecting Yangji-myeon to the city's major economic hubs and reflect it in the '2040 Yongin Urban Master Plan.'
The city has requested Korea Expressway Corporation to expand the Yeongdong Expressway section from Yongin IC to Yangji IC, which causes bottlenecks and congestion on surrounding national roads, from the existing eight lanes to ten lanes.
The city also plans to continuously expand urban planning roads. In the Namgok-ri area, where a large apartment complex is scheduled to be built, a 960-meter-long four-lane road connecting National Route 42 to Namgokcheon will be completed by the end of next year. Additionally, a 343-meter four-lane road leading from near Yangji 2 Bridge on National Route 42 to Namgok-ri will be newly constructed.
Measures to alleviate road congestion within the villages around Yangji-ri have also been prepared. The 400-meter section from Yangji Nonghyup to the Yangji-myeon Administrative Welfare Center is currently being designed to expand from two lanes to four lanes. The 1.12 km section from Yangji Intersection to Yangji Resort is also undergoing land compensation work for expansion to four lanes.
Lee Sang-il, mayor of Yongin City, said, "We will continuously strive to expand transportation infrastructure by proactively considering the rapidly increasing traffic demand due to the establishment of the semiconductor industrial complex and preparing comprehensive traffic measures."
