"Summarizing a Whole Book at Once"... OpenAI Unveils Latest 'GPT-4 Turbo'

ChatGPT developer OpenAI held its first developer conference and unveiled a more powerful generative artificial intelligence (AI) model.

On the 6th (local time), OpenAI held its first developer conference (Dev Day) in San Francisco, California, USA, and introduced the latest AI model, 'GPT-4 Turbo.' This model provides answers based on data learned up to April. The previous version, GPT-4, contained information learned only up to January of last year.

Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said in his keynote speech, "We were as annoyed as you, perhaps even more so, that GPT's knowledge of the world ended in 2021." He continued, "If you asked GPT-4 who won the Super Bowl in February 2022, it wouldn't know, but GPT-4 Turbo can."

The amount of information that can be input at one time has also increased significantly. While the previous version could only accept about 3,000 words, GPT-4 Turbo can handle up to 300 pages. You can even request a summary of an entire book.

Along with this, GPT-4 Turbo supports images from the latest image generation AI, 'DALL-E 3,' as well as text-to-speech conversion. DALL-E 3 is an image generation AI integrated with ChatGPT.

Users do not need to input prompts manually; they can request ChatGPT to create prompts through conversation, and ChatGPT generates the prompts, which DALL-E 3 then uses to create images.

OpenAI explained that although GPT-4 Turbo is the latest model, the cost available to developers has been reduced to about one-third (36%) of the average cost of the previous version. OpenAI currently offers GPT-4 Turbo as a preview version for developers and plans to make it available to everyone within weeks.

Meanwhile, at the Dev Day event, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft (MS), OpenAI's largest investor, was invited as a special guest. CEO Nadella joined CEO Altman on stage and said, "The cloud service Azure is undergoing significant changes through its integration with OpenAI," adding, "We will collaborate with OpenAI to build new systems."
