Jeonnam Province, together with Gwangju Metropolitan City, is making every effort to pass the preliminary feasibility study for the ‘Gwangju~Naju Metropolitan Railroad’ to improve residential conditions in the Gwangju-Jeonnam joint innovation city and revitalize the regional economy.
According to the province on the 6th, the project was jointly proposed and included as a new project in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘4th Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Implementation Plan (2021?2025)’ and the ‘4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan (2021?2030)’ in July 2021. In August of the same year, it was selected as a ‘Local Area Wide-area Railroad Leading Project.’ In May of this year, it was selected as a project subject to a preliminary feasibility study.
Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province considers it desirable for the route currently undergoing the preliminary feasibility study to pass swiftly.
However, if Gwangju City requires a route passing through Hyochon Station, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance (KDI, currently conducting the preliminary feasibility study) is reviewing several alternatives, so efforts should be made to have the alternative route reflected and reviewed.
An official from the province said, “If the metropolitan railroad network is expanded to Naju City adjacent to Gwangju, accessibility within the same living area will improve, providing transportation convenience as well as contributing to the improvement of residential conditions and revitalization of the regional economy. We will work together with Gwangju City to ensure that the ‘Gwangju~Naju Metropolitan Railroad’ passes the preliminary feasibility study and that the project is promptly promoted.”
