Open in Taoyuan City, Taiwan
Customer Demand Forecasting with AI Technology
Coupang has opened its second large fulfillment center just one year after entering the Taiwan market, and plans to unveil a third fulfillment center in the first half of next year.
On the 3rd, Coupang held a commemorative event announcing the opening of its second fulfillment center in Taipei City, Taiwan. The event was attended by Coupang Inc. Chairman Kim Beom-seok, Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua, Deputy Minister of Digital Development Li Hai-run, Sandra Oudkirk, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), and Tao Yuan Mayor Chang Shan-cheng, among others.
The newly opened second fulfillment center is located in Taoyuan City in the northwest region of Taiwan. It is a large-scale logistics center based on smart logistics equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies to predict and analyze customer demand, as well as various automation technologies. Following the opening of this second fulfillment center, Coupang plans to open a third fulfillment center in the first half of next year.
At the event, Chairman Kim said, "When we launched Coupang in Korea over 10 years ago, American investors showed virtually no interest in Korean tech startups." He added, "We continuously persuaded American investors who initially rejected investment, and eventually opened the door for American venture capital to enter Korea." Chairman Kim emphasized, "Coupang's success in the Taiwan market goes beyond individual companies and connects neighboring Asian countries through increased trade between nations."
With the addition of large-scale fulfillment centers in Taiwan, Coupang expects that domestic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in Taiwan will also gain growth engines. Currently, 70% of the millions of products sold in Taiwan are from domestic SMEs. Since Coupang started its Taiwan business one year ago, the number of domestic SMEs exporting products locally in Taiwan has recently surpassed 12,000.
A Coupang official stated, "For many SMEs struggling to enter overseas markets, Coupang's Taiwan business is becoming an alternative channel for new market development. We will actively support domestic small and medium-sized merchants to showcase their products to more customers beyond Korea and grow together with Coupang."
