Gwangjin-gu Temporarily Allows Kimchi Waste Disposal in General Volume-Based Waste System Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, Kimchi-Making Volunteer Service

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) will operate a special collection period until the end of this year, allowing kimchi-making waste to be disposed of in regular volume-based waste bags.

Kimchi-making involves various ingredients such as napa cabbage and radish, resulting in a large amount of waste. However, food waste bags have a maximum capacity of only 5ℓ, causing inconvenience in handling kimchi-making waste.

Accordingly, the district is implementing a "Special Collection Period for Kimchi-making Waste" during the peak kimchi-making season. Until December 31, kimchi-making waste from single-family homes, multi-family homes, and apartment complexes can be disposed of in 20ℓ volume-based waste bags.

The method is to attach a "Kimchi-making Waste Exclusive Sticker" on the outside of the bag and dispose of it on the designated food waste collection day. Stickers can be obtained at the local community service centers or through the Gwangjin-gu Office website, or by using the sticker published in the November issue of the district newsletter "Achasan Echo." However, only kimchi-making waste should be placed inside, and items classified as general waste such as chili stems, green onion roots, and onion skins must be separated and disposed of accordingly. Also, mixing with household waste or recyclables will result in fines, so caution is required.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, "Since a large amount of waste is generated during the kimchi-making season, we are operating a special collection period," and added, "We will promptly and cleanly process the disposed waste to minimize inconvenience to residents."
