Lecture on Definition of Slow Learners, Characteristics by Life Cycle, Need for Support, and Specific Intervention Methods... Online Application on Geumcheon-gu Education Portal, First 120 Applicants Accepted... Free Screening Test Ongoing for Identifying and Supporting Eligible Participants
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) announced that on the 14th at 7 PM, a lecture titled "Into a World Walking Together," which listens to the stories of slow learners (borderline intellectual functioning), will be held at the district office auditorium.
"Slow learners" refer to individuals who do not meet the criteria for intellectual disability but have cognitive abilities below average intelligence, making it difficult for them to adapt to the society they belong to and thus require support and protection.
This lecture is organized to help residents and workers in Geumcheon-gu understand slow learners and to alleviate social prejudice.
Yoo Sun-mi, director of the Korea Metacognition Psychology Institute, will explain to residents the definition and characteristics of slow learners, their life cycle traits from childhood to youth, the necessity of assistance, and specific intervention methods for each life stage.
Registration is open on a first-come, first-served basis for 120 people. Those who wish to participate in the lecture can apply online through the "Geumcheon-gu Education Portal."
To support slow learners who are in welfare blind spots, Geumcheon-gu enacted the Geumcheon-gu Slow Learners Support Ordinance in January this year. Additionally, in collaboration with the local cognitive psychology center, free screening tests are being conducted to identify slow learners in need of support.
Starting in 2024, the district plans to train specialized instructors for slow learners and operate customized programs such as psychological counseling for the individuals and their families, as well as cognitive and social skills classes.
Yoo Seong-hoon, mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, "This lecture will help improve residents' awareness of slow learners and serve as an opportunity to create a mature society where we live together." He added, "We hope for the active interest and participation of residents."
