EU First Vice-President Special Lecture at Korea University: "Korea, a Key Partner of the EU"

Korea University announced on the 2nd that it held a special lecture on the 31st of last month by inviting Valdis Dombrovskis, the First Vice-President of the European Union (EU) Commission. Vice-President Dombrovskis is a top EU official who served as the Prime Minister of Latvia from 2009 to 2014.

This special lecture was held under the theme of ‘Korea-EU Economic and Trade Relations,’ covering topics such as promoting national competitiveness, a rules-based multilateral operating system, digital trade, and carbon neutrality.

Vice-President Dombrovskis first stated, "Korea and the EU have extended mutual support on international security issues, including the war in Ukraine." He continued, "The green and digital partnership has emerged as a core topic in the current bilateral trade relationship," adding, "Korea is playing an increasingly important role as a key partner in the EU’s digitalization and environmental transition processes." Furthermore, he proposed strengthening strategic green energy cooperation between Korea and the EU in the pursuit of carbon neutrality.

After concluding the lecture, Vice-President Dombrovskis engaged in an in-depth discussion with attendees focusing on topics such as the impact of digital trade and new regulations on Korean companies entering the EU market, regulations and tariffs on carbon-intensive products, and EU multilateralism.

Meanwhile, the special lecture was attended by Korea University President Kim Dong-won, along with faculty and students of Korea University, ambassadors from over ten countries, and the European diplomatic corps in Korea.
