According to the agreement made at the 2012 Korea-China-Japan Cultural Ministers' Meeting, a city with a distinctive local culture has been selected annually since 2014. At the Korea-China-Japan Cultural Ministers' Meeting held last September, Gimhae City in Korea, Weifang and Dalian Cities in China, and Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan were announced as the designated cities for next year.

The selected local governments plan and exchange cultural events together with the East Asian Cultural Cities of China and Japan throughout the year. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism supports exchanges in various fields such as culture, arts, and tourism.

The selection criteria include ▲city capabilities ▲project implementation plan ▲local culture development plan ▲funding plan, among others. Interested local governments can submit an application letter in the name of the head of the local government to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism by referring to the application guidelines.
