Jangseong-gun Puts Full Effort into Lumpy Skin Disease Prevention... Vaccination for Livestock Farms

As the viral disease 'Lumpy Skin Disease,' which infects cattle, spreads to some areas of Jeollanam-do, Jangseong County is maximizing quarantine efficiency through collaboration between departments and residents.

According to the county on the 1st, Lumpy Skin Disease, a Category 1 livestock infectious disease managed by the World Organisation for Animal Health, is transmitted only to cattle through blood-sucking insects such as mosquitoes.

Currently, the cattle breeding status in the Jangseong area consists of about 17,700 heads across 575 farms, with two livestock facilities located in Hwangryong-myeon.

The county will conduct Lumpy Skin Disease vaccinations for all cattle being raised from the 1st to the 5th of this month.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' policy, vaccination support through veterinarians is provided only to small-scale livestock farms, and professional farmers with 50 or more heads are expected to vaccinate on their own. However, Jangseong County is supporting all farms by investing county funds.

A quarantine countermeasure situation room has also been established and is in operation, focusing administrative efforts on disinfecting livestock barns to prevent transmission by mosquitoes.

Jangseong County Health Center, eup/myeon pest control teams, and the Livestock Cooperative joint pest control team have also joined the quarantine efforts. They are intensifying disinfection work around farms and places where mosquito larvae can grow, such as water puddles. The Health Center separately conducted an emergency quarantine situation inspection to check whether farms are complying with disinfection and to assess the amount of insecticide held.

For farms wishing for quarantine support, disinfectors and chemicals are lent to enable self-response, and mosquito repellent lamps are provided to enhance quarantine effectiveness.

In addition, the Jangseong Interchange (IC) base disinfection facility continues to operate without gaps.

County Governor Kim Han-jong said, "To completely block Lumpy Skin Disease, we will focus on the 'three elements' of on-site inspection, vaccination, and quarantine," and urged, "Livestock farmers should strictly refrain from gatherings and events."

Meanwhile, if cattle being raised show suspected infection symptoms such as a high fever above 41℃, hard lumps, decreased milk production, loss of appetite, or increased secretions, it should be reported to the Agriculture and Livestock Department's quarantine countermeasure situation room.
