LG Display's Future Growth Engine is 'Automotive OLED'

Technology Gap with Tandem OLED
Number of Clients Increases to 9 in 4 Years

LG Display is focusing on widening its lead in automotive organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. With the rapid rise of future mobility centered on autonomous vehicles, the company aims to actively respond to the sharply increasing demand for automotive OLEDs.

LG Display's automotive OLEDs are characterized by superior image quality and viewing angles compared to liquid crystal displays (LCDs), while consuming less power. In particular, their thin and lightweight design and ability to realize natural curved shapes have attracted strong interest from component suppliers and automakers.

Above all, LG Display is expanding the technological gap with competitors based on its differentiated tandem OLED elements. The tandem OLED element, first developed by the company in 2019, applies 2-stack OLED technology by stacking two organic light-emitting layers. This adds an extra organic light-emitting layer at the same thickness as before, enabling the production of OLEDs with enhanced durability such as longer lifespan and higher brightness. Theoretically, screen brightness is doubled and lifespan is quadrupled compared to previous technology. Starting this year, LG Display plans to further widen the technology gap by mass-producing the second-generation tandem OLED elements.

LG Display is also increasing its market dominance by supplying products to global automakers. The company's automotive OLED customer base rapidly grew to nine within four years since the first mass production in 2019 with Cadillac. Customers include Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, Porsche, GM, Genesis, and Lucid.

Global market research firm Omdia reported that LG Display has held the number one market share (by sales) in the premium automotive display market for 10 inches and above for five consecutive years since 2018.

Based on tandem OLED technology, LG Display plans to further strengthen its position as the world’s number one premium automotive display provider by leading with three major product lineups: plastic (P)-OLED, advanced thin OLED (ATO), and low-temperature polycrystalline silicon LCD (LTPS LCD).
