Mapo-gu Hongdae Red Road Connects All the Way to Hangang

Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Gang-su) is promoting the ‘Healing Street Project Connecting to the Han River,’ which links the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail, Hongdae Red Road, and the Han River.

The construction site, Red Road R7 (Eoulmadang-ro between Dokmak-ro and Tojeong-ro), is a Seoul metropolitan road and an important section directly connecting the Hongdae Cultural Arts Tourism Special Zone and the Han River.

In particular, along with Tojeong-ro, which was selected as one of the ‘220 Summer Green Paths of Seoul,’ it is used as a walking path for citizens connecting to the Han River. However, the sidewalk is narrow, and illegal parking is rampant, causing inconvenience for both pedestrians and vehicles.

Accordingly, the district plans to start the ‘Healing Street Project Connecting to the Han River,’ aiming for completion in April next year, by expanding the sidewalk through road dieting and improving the surrounding pedestrian environment.

By the end of next month, the district will improve the section from two-way traffic to one-way traffic and expand the existing east-side (Hyundai Town side) sidewalk width from 1.7?2m to 3.5m (reducing the road width from 6m to 4.5m).

Additionally, after the winter season (December 2023 to February 2024), the sidewalks of Tojeong-ro, Eoulmadang-ro 3-gil, and Tojeong-ro 5-gil, where an increase in pedestrian traffic is expected due to the influx of domestic and foreign tourists, will be prioritized for maintenance to prevent pedestrian inconvenience and safety accidents.

Furthermore, various convenience facilities, green spaces, and resting areas will be reorganized to create a premium cherry blossom healing street where residents and tourists can enjoy relaxing and contemplation.

The district expects that this project will create a safe and comfortable pedestrian environment centered on people, making it easier to access the Han River. Moreover, the commercial and tourist influx, previously limited to the Hongdae central area, will naturally extend to the Han River, giving a long-term boost to Mapo-gu’s tourism industry.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “The Red Road R7 pedestrian path project connecting to the Han River is a twofold project for pedestrian safety and tourism resource development,” adding, “We will continue to closely identify hidden local resources and actively utilize them for the development of Mapo-gu and commercial district revitalization.”
