Gwangju Nam-gu Surpasses 200 Units in Hope Housing Remodeling Project

Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has achieved the milestone of surpassing 200 remodeled housing units aimed at improving residential welfare for vulnerable residents in the district, marking 10 years since the project’s inception.

Gwangju Nam-gu Surpasses 200 Units in Hope Housing Remodeling Project

On the 31st, according to Nam-gu, a completion ceremony was held for the 200th remodeled Hope Housing unit in Sajik-dong. It has been 10 years since the Hope Housing remodeling project began in 2013.

The owners of the 200th unit are a low-income elderly couple residing in Sajik-dong. Their home was an aging house with a slate roof that had collapsed, causing leaks and various damages throughout.

Nam-gu removed the slate roof and carried out new roof installation and other repairs using 1.6 million KRW from the Community Chest of Korea and 2 million KRW from the Euddeumhyo Nam-gu Integrated Care project funds.

The ability to open 200 Hope Housing units across the district over the past decade is attributed to the continuous generosity of the local community.

To date, donations collected for the Hope Housing remodeling project have reached approximately 674 million KRW.

In particular, new homes built with these donations have brought happiness to households including low-income disabled families, elderly living alone, those struggling to maintain livelihoods due to various illnesses, single female disabled households, single-parent families, and multicultural families.

The Hope Housing remodeling project, promoted as a regionally specialized policy by Nam-gu, is currently recognized as a role model among local governments nationwide in the field of residential welfare.

Last year, it won the grand prize at the 5th Korea Residential Welfare Culture Contest hosted by the Residential Welfare Culture Movement Headquarters and sponsored by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. Additionally, in 2021, it was the only local government in the Gwangju-Jeonnam region to be selected as an excellent institution in the 1st Residential Welfare Awards conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

A Nam-gu official said, "We express our gratitude to all community members who have supported the Hope Housing remodeling project through generous donations, volunteering, and talent sharing. We will do our best to promote the project to improve residential welfare for vulnerable households."
