Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam has activated the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters and is making every effort to prevent the spread after Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), a viral infectious disease that occurs in cattle, was confirmed at one livestock farm in Daesan-myeon, Uichang-gu.

Changwon Special City has activated the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to prevent the spread of bovine lumpy skin disease.

Lumpy Skin Disease is a viral disease that occurs only in cattle and is transmitted by blood-sucking insects such as mosquitoes and ticks. Infected animals exhibit symptoms such as high fever and skin nodules (hard lumps), and problems such as reduced milk production, abortion, infertility, and death may occur. The incubation period is usually short, ranging from 4 to 14 days, with a maximum of 28 days.

The Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters is composed of 10 departments, including the Livestock Division and Disaster Response Officer, maintaining a 24-hour quarantine system and entering an emergency response posture to prevent the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease.

The headquarters swiftly completed initial responses such as installing control posts and restricting movement along the routes of infected cattle farms, setting quarantine zones, blocking blood-sucking insects, and culling at the affected farms. They are also actively promoting quarantine activities through card news on the city’s homepage.

Jang Geum-yong, the First Deputy Mayor, said, “Proactive response is the most important measure to prevent the gradually spreading livestock infectious disease,” and added, “We urge cattle farmers to refrain from events and gatherings, control the entry of external vehicles, and thoroughly disinfect both inside and outside the farms.”
