Seongdong-gu Ttukdo Market and Other Traditional Markets Reborn Through Artists' Touch

71 Stores in Ttukdo Market, Haengdang Market, and Wangsimni Doseondong Shopping District Transform with Artistic Flair by Local Artists... Supporting the Revival of Traditional Market Stores through the 'Seongdong-style Artterior' Project to Revitalize Local Commerce

Seongdong-gu Ttukdo Market and Other Traditional Markets Reborn Through Artists' Touch

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) has successfully completed the 'Seongdong-style Artterior Project' targeting 71 traditional market stores.

This year, under the theme of 'Transformation of Traditional Markets,' the project was carried out in 71 stores in Ttukdo Market, Haengdang Market, and Wangsimni Doseondong shopping districts. Twenty-six local artists also participated, transforming previously characterless stores into aesthetically appealing shops.

The 'Seongdong-style Artterior Project' began in 2021, targeting 39 stores in the Sageun-dong and Songjeong-dong areas that were struggling due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, focused support was provided to 105 stores across three areas: Yongdap Sangga Market, Muhakbong Shopping District, and Shingeumho Station Alley Shopping District. Through this, the district injected new vitality into the stagnant local commercial areas and provided local artists with opportunities for social participation.

This year as well, through collaboration between small business owners and artists, murals that create the illusion of being by the sea were painted, and pictures that evoke the image of actually kicking briquettes when stepping on them were created. Additionally, unique lighting that stands out even more at night was installed, creating photo zones throughout the streets that attract visitors' attention.

Kim, a restaurant owner at Haengdang Market who participated in this Artterior project, expressed gratitude, saying, "After decorating the store beautifully, I feel a renewed desire to start fresh, which brings energy and joy."

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "Although everyone is struggling due to the economic downturn, we will strive to revitalize the local commercial areas through policies that can serve as a stepping stone for a new leap forward."
