Incheon International Airport Corporation announced on the 30th that it has newly acquired the Public Health Safety Certification from the Airports Council International (ACI).
The ACI certification was newly introduced this year by completely overhauling the airport health certification system that operated during the COVID-19 pandemic to support the sustainable quarantine capabilities of airports. The certification is valid for three years.
The previous certification mainly evaluated the appropriateness of quarantine measures applied by airport operators in response to COVID-19. The new certification aims to verify the airport's preparedness level for potential emerging infectious diseases in the future.
Incheon Airport was the first airport in the Asia-Pacific region to obtain this certification in 2020 and has been re-certified for three consecutive years. The evaluation criteria consist of 56 detailed items across eight areas: public health and safety measures, communication and sanitation disinfection, business continuity management plans, coordination, resilience development, technology, equipment and materials, continuous improvement, and staff deployment.
In particular, the airport was recognized for faithfully implementing items such as establishing and improving continuity management plans and risk assessments. It also received high praise from evaluators as an excellent case of an emerging infectious disease response system.
Lee Hak-jae, President of Incheon International Airport Corporation, said, “Based on the experience accumulated during the COVID-19 crisis response, we will establish a permanent response system capable of handling future emerging infectious diseases, creating an airport environment where passengers can use the facilities with confidence.”
