[Box Office] Romantic Comedy '30il' Ranks 2nd
Japanese Anime 'How Do You Live?' Surpasses 590,000 Viewers
Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki's new film 'How Do You Live?' topped the box office on its opening weekend, nearing 1 million viewers.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the 30th, the animated film 'How Do You Live?' (directed by Hayao Miyazaki) attracted 598,674 viewers over the three-day weekend (27th?29th), securing the number one spot at the box office. It recorded a revenue share of 60.5%. Since its release on the 25th, the film has drawn a cumulative audience of 947,982.
'How Do You Live?' is an animated film by director Miyazaki, his first in 10 years since 'The Wind Rises' (2013). It depicts a time- and space-transcending fantasy experienced by a boy named Mahito who accidentally steps into a mysterious world beyond time and space.
The film attracted around 240,000 viewers on its opening day, generating interest, but audience opinions are divided. The CGV 'Golden Egg Index,' a real audience rating, remained in the 70% range.
In South Korea, the film has received as much criticism as attention. Among viewers, there are reactions that certain plot elements are difficult to understand, such as settings that seem to justify the harms of Japanese imperialism and the storyline where the protagonist marries his sister-in-law after his wife's death.
The romantic comedy '30 Days' (directed by Nam Dae-jung), starring actors Kang Ha-neul and Jung So-min, attracted 144,445 viewers during this period, ranking first. Released on the 3rd, the film has steadily drawn audiences, reaching a cumulative total of 1,839,998 viewers and surpassing its break-even point.
The action film 'Brave Citizen' (directed by Park Jin-pyo), starring Shin Hye-sun and released on the 25th, drew 108,736 viewers, ranking third.
Martin Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' attracted 26,799 viewers, placing fourth.
The fifth place went to 'Blue Giant,' sixth to 'Puppy Rescue Team: The Mighty Movie,' seventh to 'Exorcist: The Believer,' and tenth to 'Open the Door' (directed by Jang Hang-jun).
The total number of moviegoers visiting theaters over the weekend was counted at 1,002,748.
