Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 29th that it will begin full-scale production of 'Garussal' (powdered rice).
Garussal is a variety of rice suitable for powdering, gaining attention as a substitute for wheat flour. It can be ground directly without soaking in water, making processing easier.
Recently, demand for rice flour instead of wheat has increased, brightening the industry's outlook. It is widely used as an ingredient in various processed foods.
Another advantage is that it can be cultivated using the same farming methods as conventional rice, lowering the 'entry barrier' for farmers.
In Jangseong, about 2.7 hectares (ha) have been cultivated so far, but the scale is expected to expand significantly in the future.
The county was selected for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' 2024 Garussal Specialized Cultivation Complex project, enabling the cultivation area to increase to 60ha with about 20 farming households.
In line with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' policy to promote Garussal cultivation, active support for farming households will also be provided.
For the Garussal cultivation complex, initiatives such as ▲ farmer education ▲ expert on-site consultation ▲ support for facility and equipment purchases ▲ support for Garussal product development will be implemented.
All harvested Garussal will be purchased as public stock rice to reduce the burden on farmers. The price will be the same as general public stock rice.
County Governor Kim Han-jong said, “We expect Garussal cultivation to help alleviate the current issues of declining rice consumption and overproduction,” adding, “We will always listen carefully to the voices from the agricultural field to ensure successful promotion as planned.”
