Visit of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to Boseong County
Plans to Host an International Symposium on Marine Ecology in the Future
Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, is strengthening international cooperation for the management of Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat, which has been registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
Experts from The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the largest bird and habitat conservation organization in Europe, visited Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat on the 26th.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds is currently promoting the registration of the eastern coast wetlands of the UK, included in the East Atlantic Flyway migratory bird route, as a World Natural Heritage site. They visited Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat to share advanced technologies and experiences for managing World Natural Heritage registrations.
Boseong-gun plans to establish a sustainable cooperation system with The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and host international events such as marine ecology symposiums in the future.
The visiting delegation included Jeff Kew, Wetland Program Manager; Julianne Evans, Head of Ecology Department; and Steve Rowland, Regional Manager, along with domestic ecological experts.
Boseong-gun introduced ongoing projects for sustainable conservation and utilization of the tidal flat and migratory birds, including the Beolgyo Tidal Flat Restoration Project, the Beolgyo-Jangdo Ecological Trail Construction Project, and the Yeojaman National Marine Park Development Project.
They also visited the Boseong Beolbae Exhibition Hall, which showcases the history of the 'Beolbae Fishery' designated as the 2nd National Important Fishery Heritage, sharing its value.
Kim Cheol-woo, Mayor of Boseong-gun, said, "To preserve the globally recognized value of Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat, we will strengthen international exchange and cooperation systems and promote the value of Boseong Beolgyo Tidal Flat worldwide through continuous exchanges."
Meanwhile, The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, established in 1889 with 1.2 million members, is the largest bird and habitat conservation organization in Europe. Its core activities include restoring, protecting, and managing owned lands and nature reserves based on science.
