Delivery Worker Attempts Sexual Assault on Woman Living in One-Room Apartment... Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison

Attempted Rape with Weapon on 20s Woman in One-Room District
Prosecutors Seek 30-Year Sentence for Violating Sexual Violence Punishment Act
"Premeditated Crime... Boyfriend Suffered 24 Weeks Medical Treatment"

A delivery worker in his 20s who followed a woman returning home in a one-room apartment area, attempted sexual assault, and wielded a weapon against a man who tried to stop him was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

On the 25th, at the Daegu District Court, 11th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Lee Jong-gil), during the sentencing hearing for delivery worker Mr. A (28) on charges including violation of the Sexual Violence Punishment Act, the prosecution requested the court to sentence him to 30 years in prison. They also requested orders including a 10-year employment restriction at child-related institutions and 20 years of electronic monitoring.

Mr. A followed Ms. B (23), who was entering a one-room building in Buk-gu, Daegu, at around 10:56 p.m. on May 13, and attempted to sexually assault her by slashing her wrist with a weapon. However, Mr. C (23), Ms. B’s boyfriend who was with her, intervened, preventing the assault from being completed. Mr. A fled immediately after the crime but was caught about three hours later after the police tracked the motorcycle license plate.

During this incident, Mr. A swung the weapon multiple times, causing serious injuries to both Ms. B and Mr. C. In particular, Mr. C was stabbed in the face and neck, resulting in an unconscious state and requiring treatment in the intensive care unit. He sustained injuries requiring 24 weeks of medical treatment and is expected to need more than a year of recovery.

Mr. C’s father, through a national petition to the National Assembly in August, stated, “After being transported to the emergency room, he suffered cardiac arrest twice due to excessive bleeding. The attending professor shouted, ‘He will die within 10 minutes,’ and that moment is still unforgettable. It is devastating to think that at the young age of 23, he will have to live with a lifelong disability,” and requested strict punishment and public disclosure of the perpetrator’s identity.

It was determined that Mr. A’s crime was premeditated. The prosecution pointed out, “The defendant searched extensively on the internet for terms like ‘rape’ and ‘rape resulting in death’ starting four days before the crime and meticulously planned to rape and kill a woman living in a one-room apartment. On the day of the crime, he selected his target in a one-room apartment area where many women live alone.”

They added, “The female victim of the rape and injury has severely limited motor functions due to the crime, and the male victim is currently unable to walk independently or perform daily activities. Considering the very high risk of reoffending, the defendant should receive the most severe punishment commensurate with his crimes.”

In his final argument, Mr. A’s defense attorney stated, “This was an undeniably wrongful act,” and pledged, “We will do our best to restore the victims’ damages.” Mr. A said, “I want to sincerely apologize to the victims. I will live with a heart of lifelong remorse and atonement.”

The sentencing hearing for Mr. A is scheduled for December 1.
