A contaminated water leak occurred at the purification facility of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan (referred to as "treated water" by the Japanese government).

According to major foreign media on the 25th, five workers cleaning the pipes of the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS), which purifies the contaminated water, were splashed with liquid containing radioactive materials.

The amount of contaminated water released was about 100 ml, and the workers were wearing masks and full-body protective suits, so it is known that the liquid did not penetrate their bodies.

However, one worker's mask was contaminated with radioactive material, triggering an alarm indicating that the radiation exposure exceeded the standard limit of 5 mSv (millisieverts), and four others had contaminated water come into contact with their skin, which they washed off with water.

Nevertheless, two workers' radiation levels on their body surfaces did not drop below the standard limit even after more than nine hours, so they were transferred to the nearby Fukushima Prefectural University Hospital, where they continue to receive decontamination and treatment.

A Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) official stated regarding the accident, "It is possible that a hose came off from a gas-filled tank."

He added, "According to the medical team's diagnosis, the workers do not show acute symptoms caused by radiation, and the detailed radiation exposure levels are being checked."

The five workers involved in the accident are in their 20s to 40s and belong to a TEPCO subcontractor.
