Selected as an Excellent Case in Eco-Friendly Forest Watershed Management Project
Chosen for Multipurpose Sabangdam Contest, Secured 2 Billion KRW Project Budget
Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 25th that it was selected as the best institution nationwide in the '6th Eco-friendly Erosion Control Facility Best Practice' contest.
The Korea Forest Service held a contest for best practices of eco-friendly erosion control facilities constructed by cities, counties, and districts nationwide to improve quality and enhance landscape value through the dissemination of eco-friendly erosion control technologies, as the importance of erosion control projects increases due to the frequent occurrence of natural disasters such as heavy rains and the growing need for eco-friendly erosion control projects harmonized with natural scenery.
Gwangyang City was selected as the best institution for its excellent evaluation of the forest watershed management project implemented in 2020 in the Jukcheon-ri area of Okryong-myeon, where artificial facilities were avoided, natural stones generated within the project site were used, and trees in the stream were preserved, utilizing the terrain to the fullest with eco-friendly construction methods, including the construction of one erosion control dam and 0.53 km of stream conservation.
With this nationwide best institution selection, the city secured 2 billion KRW in project funds for the 'Multipurpose Erosion Control Dam' project to secure forest water resources that can be used as a water source for large forest fires and are ecologically and environmentally healthy.
The city plans to thoroughly carry out erosion control projects such as erosion control dams, stream conservation, and mountain erosion control next year as well, doing its best to prevent human and property damage caused by forest disasters and to protect sound forest resources.
Lee Gang-seong, Director of the Forest Income Division, said, “We will make further efforts to prepare proactive measures to ensure the safety of citizens from forest disasters caused by heavy rains and typhoons due to abnormal climate and to promote the construction of eco-friendly erosion control facilities that harmonize with the surrounding natural scenery.”
