Excellent Smart City Policies: Praised for Resolving Residents' Inconveniences with Smart Technology
Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the Smart City Excellent Policy category at the 2023 Korea Urban Awards.
According to the county on the 18th, the Korea Urban Awards is an annual event hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport that comprehensively evaluates the sustainability and living infrastructure levels of cities across all basic local governments nationwide and selects outstanding local governments for awards.
The evaluation covers urban sustainability reflecting trends such as aging population, multiculturalism, and green growth; creating livable cities led by local governments and residents; and urban policy projects in five areas reflecting changes in Korea’s urban planning conditions and global urban planning trends.

Haenam-gun ranked first nationwide in the Smart City category, an excellent policy sector, and received the highest award, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award.
Haenam-gun has been actively promoting smart city plans by establishing a comprehensive plan for a Haenam-specialized smart city, implementing a hub-type smart city development project, and building an integrated smart city platform.
In particular, it has achieved significant results by carrying out smart city projects that change residents’ daily lives, such as operating Haenam Sotong Net, a smartphone app exclusively for residents reflecting the characteristics of rural areas, unmanned mental health screening, AI-IoT-based senior health management, smart traffic safety solutions, agricultural and livestock drone aerial pest control, and crackdowns on illegal waste dumping.
In addition, the county is actively responding to various smart city-related public projects to create an advanced smart city that benefits all residents.
The award ceremony was held on the 17th at the Urban Day event in Jinju-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.
County Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan said, “By improving inconveniences felt by residents in daily life through the use of smart technology, we have achieved good results and borne the fruit of being selected for this smart city award. We will continue to strive to create a smart city Haenam-gun where no resident is left behind and everyone can enjoy together.”
